When a Digital Zoom is Needed

Youve been told that you should disregard claims of large digital zoom ratios and have been warned that to usea digital zoom is to ruin the picture with visible artifacts and pixels. To a certain extent, these statements are true but they dont tell the whole story.

Digital cameras that feature an optical zoom and a digital zoom offer the option of using one or the other or even both together. An optical zoom lens of 28 to 200 mm may not be enough in some situations. This is where the digital zoom comes in handy.

Say you are at a football game and want to get a close up of your son in action. A 200mm lens setting would probably include three or four football players in the scene, making it difficult to recognize faces. A two times digital zoom makes the focal length 400 mm, cropping the scene into a two football player picture. A four X digital zoom setting will garner a head and shoulder close up of one football player.

At two X digital zoom, the number of pixels are cut in half but digital processing and interpolating between pixels will smooth out the image with very little loss in quality. If your digital camera starts out with 8MB of pixels, the final result of 4MB will still enlarge to over eight by ten size without losing quality. At four X digital zoom, the pixels are reduced to 2MB which will visibly degrade the image somewhat. This sacrifice in quality is often acceptable if you capture a fantastic shot of action.

Other subjects that would benefit from the use of the digital zoom are bird photography, wild animal photography, candid people shots and sport events of all kinds. While most photographic images are covered with the normal optical zoom range, sometimes the digital zoom can save the day.

Microsoft Vista and Wireless Adapters - Compatibility, Usability

Youre all wondering, how are wireless adapters working with the new microsoft Vista. There is no cut and paste answer for that because it all depends on the kind of wireless network you are using. Are you using Netgear or perhaps linksys. I will try to clarify as many different adapters as I can and see if I can find a quick fix for your adapter questions.

linksys wireless adapter

If you use Lnksys and you are wondering if Vista will work with it, linksys has come out with a new driver that is compatible with Vista. If you would like to download it, just got to linksys.com. One you download these files, you can then go to your control panel to search for your driver and point to the download files.

Netgear driver problem

If you are a Netgear user, you will have some trouble with compatibility. microsoft offers a beta driver that you can download that is not affiliated with Netgear. You can download the driver at, http://netgear.com. Basically, beta means that the code is not successfully tested but it is a way for people to give feedback and allow changed to be made.

If you use Netgear, I recommend that you steer clear until everything is cleared so you can use Vista without any problems. This is really a pain to deal with so stick with XP until it is resolved.

wireless adapter battery Drain

One problem that people are also having with Vista is that the laptop batteries get drained quickly while connected to the internet. It has to do with the fact that many wireless connections do not have the ability to go into the power save mode that the microsoft Vista operating system allows for.

All in all, Vista has some problems with compatibility when it comes to some wireless adapters but there are fixes available. The only problem that I see that will require some consideration from people has to do with laptops. They have the double threat of having batteries that can overheat as well as connections that cannot be made.

The Nintendo Revolution Controller - Skepticism Meets Reality

Well over the past week or so I have had plenty of time to sit back and take a critical look at the new nintendo Revolution controller. Initially, when I first saw the teaser I was excited about the possibilities the new controller offered. However after some more reflection and further reading, though I am still enthusiastic, I think there are some serious questions that need to be asked.

nintendo has been an innovator in the video game industry since the early 1980s. From the very beginning, nintendo engineers have had to prove themselves. The introduction of the analogue controller and even the rumble pack was met with a great deal of skepticism, yet are considered industry standards today. However, a single hand remote style controller is arguably a much larger innovation and is met with even more skepticism.

It has been reported on several websites that the Nintendo Revolution will be compatible with gamecube titles. Of course this raises questions on how the new controller will function with these games

What we are telling people right now is that there are several peripherals in the works that will be used for the older games, said Perrin Kaplan, vice President of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for nintendo. Of course, people will be able to plug their gamecube controller right in and use that, but if they want, they can use the Revolutions peripherals for an entirely new and fresh experience.

Will gamers be able to adapt to a single hand controller? I think the answer to this question will depend on game developers. The success of the controller and the console for that matter depends on whether-or-not game developers will be able to produce games which compliment the new controller.

This also raises questions over game cross-over from one system to another. With the introduction of a whole new controller, effectively changing the way we play games, well we see a drop in big title games available for multiple systems?

With the release of the new teaser and a slew of new images, people are forgetting that the new nintendo Revolution controller is not at the final design stage.

No, this is not the final design. You wont see that until the release is here, but we are getting much closer, explained Kaplan.

Over the next several months, more information will become available. Information which will either put much of the skepticism to rest, or more likely, create even more. With a product like the nintendo Revolution controller, apprehension and skepticism are natural, making this a critical time for nintendo. With the release of the Xbox before the end of 2005 and the processing power of the Playstation 3 nintendo really does have to come up with something revolutionary to compete in the next generation game console market. Does nintendo really have something special for us? only time well tell.
